Banke’s modern identity was shaped in 1860 when the territory—along with Bardiya, Kailali, and Kanchanpur—was returned to Nepal by the British East India Company in recognition of Nepalese assistance during the 1857 Indian Uprising. Consequently, these districts earned the title Naya Muluk (New Territory).

The district is cultural melting pot. Awadhi culture has deep roots here, reflected in language, music, and festive traditions, alongside indigenous Tharu communities whose heritage is closely linked to the Terai forests and agriculture.
