Dolpa (डोल्पा)

Dolpa is Nepal's largest district by area (7,889 km²), a remote, trans-Himalayan region in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri and Kanjiroba massifs. The district features the stunning Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepal's largest national park, and the spectacular Phoksundo Lake, known for its deep blue waters and dramatic setting. Dunai, the headquarters, is a small bazaar town on the Thuli Bheri River. Dolpa is home to the Dolpo-pa (people of Dolpo), a Tibetan-Buddhist community practicing the ancient Bon religion, who have preserved their unique culture, language, and traditions for centuries. The district gained international fame through Peter Matthiessen's book "The Snow Leopard" and the Eric Valli film "Himalaya." The district's economy is based on transhumance pastoralism, traditional agriculture (buckwheat, barley, and yak herding), and limited tourism.
