Introduction

Nuwakot (नुवाकोट) Overview

· Nuwakot is a historic hill district west of Kathmandu, renowned for the iconic Nuwakot Durbar, a seven-story fortress-palace that served as the military base for King Prithvi Narayan Shah during the Unification of Nepal. The district is the ancestral home of the Gorkhali royals and features numerous historical sites, including the Trishuli Bazaar and ancient temples. Nuwakot is predominantly inhabited by Tamang, Newar, and Brahmin-Chhetri communities, with a blend of Buddhist and Hindu traditions. The Trishuli River, popular for white-water rafting, flows through the district, attracting adventure tourists. Agriculture, particularly citrus fruits, rice, and maize, forms the economic base. The district is a popular weekend getaway from Kathmandu, with its well-preserved heritage sites, scenic landscapes, and pleasant climate. Cultural tourism and historical preservation are key development priorities.
