Introduction

Saptari (सप्तरी) Overview

Saptari is a Tarai district in southeastern Nepal known for the historic Koshi Barrage and the famous Chhinnamasta Shakti Peeth temple. The district is a fertile agricultural region producing rice, wheat, sugarcane, and jute on the alluvial plains of the Koshi River. The district has a significant Maithili-speaking population, with Tharu, Yadav, and Teli communities also prominent. Rajbiraj, the headquarters, is a historic town home to the famous Rajbiraj Rajdevi Temple and the Tribhuvan Highway. The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, home to the endangered wild water buffalo, attracts tourists and researchers. Saptari is also a hotbed of political activism, with the Simraungarh (ancient Mithila capital) ruins adding historical depth. The district balances agriculture, trade, and cultural heritage in the heart of Madhesh Province.
