Introduction

Siraha (सिराहा) Overview

Siraha is a Tarai district in southeastern Nepal, known for the famous Salhesh Fulbari and its annual orchid festival. The district is predominantly Maithili-speaking, with a rich cultural heritage rooted in the ancient Mithila civilization. Siraha's economy is based on agriculture, particularly rice, wheat, maize, and pulses, with growing commercial activities in Lahan, a major trading town. The Lahan-based Sagarmatha Chaudhary Eye Hospital, founded by renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Sanduk Ruit, is one of the most important eye care centers in Nepal, treating patients from across the country and neighboring India. The district also features the famous Dhanush Sagar, a sacred pond, and traditional Maithili cultural practices. Cross-border trade with India and remittances form significant economic pillars.
