Sudurpashchim Province, formerly known as the Far-Western Development Region, represents a land of immense geographic contrasts, stretching from the flat, fertile subtropical plains of the Terai to the towering, glaciated heights of the lesser Himalayas. Bordered by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north, Karnali and Lumbini Provinces to the east, and India's states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh to the west and south, the province covers an official area of 19,539 square kilometers. This strategic frontier area serves as a vital tri-national trade corridor, with major transport and infrastructure projectsdecidedly anchoring the region's future economic development. The geographical landscape is sliced by three major river systems—the Mahakali, Karnali, and Seti—which have carved spectacular gorges, created fertile valley basins, and sustained pristine forest ecosystems.

Demographically, according to the official results of Nepal's 2021 National Population and Housing Census conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics, Sudurpashchim Province has a total population of 2,694,783, resulting in a provincial population density of 137.92 people per square kilometer. The population structure exhibits a high degree of cultural diversity, representing a vibrant mosaic of indigenous Tharu lowlanders, high-altitude Sauka traders, and highland Khas-Doteli communities. Administratively, the province is divided into nine districts: Kailali, Kanchanpur, Baitadi, Achham, Doti, Bajhang, Dadeldhura, Bajura, and Darchula. The region represents a unique demographic pattern with highly dense urban clusters in the Terai plains (such as Dhangadhi and Mahendranagar) and sparsely populated, remote mountain valleys in the north.

In June 2025, Sudurpashchim achieved a historic milestone by being officially declared a 'Literate Province,' after recording a remarkable literacy rate of 96.19% among 1,623,719 individuals within the targeted 15 to 60 age group. This achievement followed a gradual, rigorous process starting from ward-level declarations and expanding through municipalities and districts, aligning with Nepal's national literacy campaign. Among the nine districts, Darchula was the first to achieve literate status, while Doti was the last. The overall provincial literacy rate for the population aged five and above stands at 76.2%, with a significant gender gap of 85.4% male literacy compared to 68.2% female literacy, highlighting ongoing educational challenges that the local government is actively working to address.
