Introduction

Kapilvastu (कपिलवस्तु) Overview

Kapilvastu is a historically significant district in Lumbini Province, home to Tilaurakot, the archaeological remains of ancient Kapilavastu, where Prince Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) spent his first 29 years before renouncing worldly life. The district is a major Buddhist pilgrimage destination, with archaeological sites including the Kapilavastu Museum and various stupas and monasteries. The ancient Shakya kingdom's ruins attract scholars, archaeologists, and pilgrims from around the world. Taulihawa, the headquarters, is a growing town with religious and cultural significance. The district is predominantly inhabited by Tharu, Awadhi-speaking communities, and Magar, with rich folk traditions. Agriculture, particularly rice, wheat, and pulses, forms the economic base, while tourism, religious pilgrimage, and cross-border trade with India contribute significantly. The Gorakhpur-Nautanwa railway line's extension to Lumbini and the proposed Lumbini development plans promise to transform the district's tourism and economy.
