Introduction

Mugu (मुगु) Overview

Mugu is a remote, high-altitude district in Karnali Province, home to the magnificent Rara Lake, Nepal's largest lake, often called the "Queen of Lakes" for its stunning beauty. Set at 2,990 m in the Rara National Park, the lake is surrounded by dense pine forests, snow-capped mountains, and diverse wildlife including musk deer, black bear, and various bird species. Gamgadhi, the headquarters, is a small hilltop town offering panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Mugu is predominantly inhabited by Chhetri, Thakuri, and Kami communities, with a small Tibetan Buddhist population in the high northern villages. The district's economy is based on subsistence agriculture (buckwheat, barley, and potatoes), animal husbandry (yaks, sheep, and goats), and limited trade. Mugu is one of Nepal's most remote and least developed districts, with the Rara trek attracting adventurous tourists seeking pristine Himalayan experiences. The district's isolation, Rara Lake, and traditional culture make it a hidden gem for ecotourism.
