Rolpa is a hill district in Lumbini Province, historically significant as the birthplace and epicenter of the 1996-2006 Maoist insurgency in Nepal, which ultimately led to the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a federal republic. The district is predominantly inhabited by Magar communities, particularly the Kham Magar, who form the backbone of the Maoist movement and remain influential in contemporary Nepali politics. The district's landscape features the scenic Jhimruk and Lungri Khola river valleys, dense forests, and the Mahabharat hills.
