Pyuthan (प्युठान)

Pyuthan is a hill district in Lumbini Province, famous for the sacred Swargadwari, the "Gateway to Heaven," a hilltop temple complex that draws thousands of Hindu pilgrims, particularly during the Swargadwari Mela. The district is predominantly inhabited by Magar, Chhetri, and Dalit communities, with a rich folk culture including the traditional Magar Salaijo and Rakkaskali Naach. Pyuthan is also known for having the lowest sex ratio in Nepal, with significant male out-migration affecting the demographic structure. The district's economy relies on agriculture (rice, maize, wheat, and millet), animal husbandry, and remittances from overseas workers. Pyuthan's lush hills, traditional villages, and the scenic Jhimruk River offer opportunities for rural tourism. The district is also historically significant as the center of the Tharu movement in the early 20th century. The Pyuthan district's cultural festivals, including the Salaijo dance and various Hindu festivals, preserve the unique Magar heritage.
