Salyan (सल्यान)

Salyan is a hill district in Karnali Province, known as one of Nepal's leading ginger and large cardamom producers, with the famous Salyan ginger highly sought after in the domestic and international markets. The district is predominantly inhabited by Magar, Chhetri, and Kami communities, with a rich cultural heritage preserved through traditional music, dance, and festivals. The Sharada River, after which the headquarters Salyan Khalanga is named, flows through the district's lush green hills. Agriculture, particularly ginger, cardamom, and traditional cereal crops, along with animal husbandry, forms the economic base. Salyan's political significance includes its role in the Maoist insurgency, which had a major impact on the district. The district is also known for the Khadga Devi Temple and the scenic Siddheshwor cave. Remittances from overseas workers supplement the agricultural income. The district's traditional Magar culture, including the Salaijo dance and shamanic practices, remains an integral part of local life.
