Introduction

Tanahun (तनहुँ) Overview

Tanahun is a culturally rich hill district in Gandaki Province, famous as the birthplace of Adikavi Bhanubhakta Acharya, who translated the Ramayana into Nepali, creating a foundation for the modern Nepali language. The district is home to the hilltop Newar town of Bandipur, a preserved medieval trading town and one of Nepal's most charming heritage destinations. Tanahun's diverse geography includes the Seti River gorge, subtropical lowlands, and the Himalayan foothills. The district is predominantly inhabited by Magar, Gurung, Newar, and Brahmin-Chhetri communities, with strong Gurkha traditions and remittance-driven economy. The proposed Seti River Hydropower Project and the Middle Marsyangdi Hydropower Plant contribute to the energy sector. Damauli, the headquarters, is a growing commercial center on the Prithvi Highway. Agriculture, tourism (especially Bandipur), and remittances are key economic activities, with Bandipur emerging as a model heritage tourism destination.
