Taplejung (ताप्लेजुङ)

Pathibhara Devi Temple is one of the most revered Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal, situated on a high mountain ridge in Taplejung at an altitude of 3,794 meters. It is believed that worshiping here grants any wish made with a pure heart. The temple is especially crowded during the festivals of Dashain and Spring, drawing thousands of devotees who climb the sacred slopes. The trail to the temple begins from Phungling Bazaar, passing through charming pine and rhododendron forests, with base camps at Bhalugaun and Phedi. Spanning over a vast area of 2,035 square kilometers, the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA) borders Sikkim, India, and Tibet, China. The conservation area is famous for its rich and fragile alpine ecosystem, protecting endangered species such as the snow leopard, red panda, and blue sheep. The village is inhabited primarily by the Walung people, who practice a distinct form of Tibetan Buddhism. The village's crown jewel is the 400-year-old Diki Chhyoling Gompa, which houses a life-size statue of Avalokiteshvara. Timbung Pokhari is a sacred, high-altitude alpine lake situated at an elevation of 4,335 meters in the Sidingwa region, sharing its boundary with the neighboring Panchthar district. The name 'Timbung' translates to 'firing of a gun' in the local Limbu language, so named because the lake frequently generates a loud thundering sound resembling gunfire during heavy mists or storm changes. Revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, the lake is believed to have divine powers that grant the wishes of pure-hearted pilgrims. Several scenic viewpoints surrounding Phungling offer panoramic vistas of the deep river valleys and the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. The town acts as a vibrant cultural meeting place where the traditions of the Limbu, Rai, Sherpa, and Newar communities blend seamlessly, visible in the local markets and eateries.
