Ilam (इलाम)

Kanyam Tea Gardens is the most famous and heavily visited tourist destination in Ilam, located in the Suryodaya Municipality at an altitude of approximately 6,000 feet. Spanning over 240 hectares of undulating hills, the estate is renowned for its perfectly manicured green tea bushes that create a breathtaking, rolling carpet of emerald green. It is a highly popular hub for domestic and Indian tourists, offering activities like horse riding, traditional dress photography, and scenic picnics. The pleasant, cool climate of Kanyam provides a refreshing escape from the scorching heat of the Terai plains below, making it a favorite destination for families and honeymooners.

Shree Antu Danda is a legendary hill station situated at an altitude of 2,328 meters in eastern Ilam, bordering Darjeeling, India. It is celebrated across Nepal as the premier viewpoint for watching spectacular sunrises and sunsets over the eastern Himalayas, including the magnificent peaks of Mount Kanchenjunga. The hill offers sweeping views of the flatlands of the Terai, lush pine forests, and the sprawling tea gardens below. Travelers can stay in authentic, community-run local homestays in Antu village, walk around the quiet Antu Lake, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the eastern hills.

Mai Pokhari is a pristine, sacred star-shaped lake situated at an altitude of 2,121 meters, approximately 13 kilometers north of Ilam Bazaar. Cradled within a dense forest of fir, juniper, oak, and birch, this sacred pond has nine distinct corners, which are believed to represent the nine avatars of Goddess Durga. Recognized as a globally important Ramsar wetland site, Mai Pokhari is exceptionally rich in biodiversity. It protects rare species like the red panda, musk deer, and the endangered Himalayan newt. The lake is a major pilgrimage site where a grand festival is held annually during Kartik Ekadasi (October-November).

Sandakpur (also known as Sandakphu) is the highest point of Ilam district, standing at a majestic altitude of 3,636 meters on the international border between Nepal and India. It is globally famous as a premier trekking destination, offering an unobstructed, panoramic 360-degree view of five of the world's highest peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and Lhotse. The trek to Sandakpur passes through the rare Choyatar and Hangetham forests, which are dense with bamboo and rhododendron and serve as key red panda habitats. Trekkers experience cold alpine climates, spectacular mountain sunrises, and the rich, interlinked cultures of the Nepalese and Indian border highlands.

Fikkal Bazaar is a bustling, vibrant market town in eastern Ilam, situated along the Mechi Highway. It serves as the primary commercial hub for the surrounding tea estates and acts as the central junction for travelers heading towards Shree Antu or crossing the international border to Darjeeling at Pashupatinagar. The bazaar is famous for its lively Thursday Haat market, where local farmers gather to trade fresh agricultural produce, orthodox tea, ginger, cardamom, and 'Chhurpi' (hard yak cheese). It is a popular stopover for tourists to purchase authentic local souvenirs and enjoy delicious local snacks.

The Tea Garden Circuit winds through the historic tea estates of Ilam Bazaar, the administrative headquarters of the district. Ilam Bazaar is a charming hill town characterized by traditional Newari-style brick houses and paved streets, situated right next to the oldest tea plantation in Nepal, established in 1863 AD. A highlight of the circuit is a visit to the historic Ilam Tea Factory to witness the traditional methods of rolling and drying orthodox tea leaves. A short walk leads to the iconic Ilam View Tower, which offers panoramic views of the entire bazaar town and the surrounding emerald tea slopes.
